How the score works

How the KompareAI score works

Every packaged food you scan gets a health score from 0 to 100. The score comes from simple, fixed rules applied to the nutrition label, not from AI, so you can see exactly why a product scored the way it did. This page lists every rule we use.

The short version

  • Every product starts at 100 points.
  • Points come off for sugar, saturated fat, salt, high calories, ultra-processing and additives.
  • Points are added for fibre and protein.
  • The total is rounded and kept between 0 and 100.
  • All nutrient values are per 100 g (or 100 ml for drinks), so products of different pack sizes compare fairly.

What takes points off

For sugar, saturated fat, salt and energy, the more a product has per 100 g, the more points it loses. Only the highest band that applies counts.

Sugar (g per 100 g)

more than 22.5−30
more than 15−22
more than 9−14
more than 4.5−7
4.5 or less0

Saturated fat (g per 100 g)

more than 10−20
more than 7−14
more than 4−8
more than 1.5−3
1.5 or less0

Salt (g per 100 g (sodium × 2.5 if only sodium is listed))

more than 1.5−20
more than 0.9−14
more than 0.45−7
0.45 or less0

Energy (kcal per 100 g)

more than 450−10
more than 335−5
335 or less0

Processing (NOVA group). Ultra-processed foods (NOVA 4) lose 15 points. Processed foods (NOVA 3) lose 5. Unprocessed or minimally processed foods and culinary ingredients (NOVA 1 and 2) lose nothing.

Additives. Each listed additive (INS/E number) takes off 3 points, up to a maximum of 12.

What adds points

  • Fibre: +8 at 6 g or more per 100 g, +4 at 3 g or more.
  • Protein: +6 at 10 g or more per 100 g, +3 at 5 g or more.

What the score means

  • 75 to 100: Good choice (A)
  • 55 to 74: Okay (B)
  • 35 to 54: Think twice (C)
  • 0 to 34: Poor (D)

A worked example

Take an imaginary pack of instant noodles. Per 100 g it has 3 g sugar, 6 g saturated fat, 2.9 g salt, 420 kcal, 3.5 g fibre and 9 g protein. It is ultra-processed (NOVA 4) and lists 3 additives.

  • Sugar 3 g: 0
  • Saturated fat 6 g: −8
  • Salt 2.9 g: −20
  • Energy 420 kcal: −5
  • Ultra-processed: −15
  • 3 additives: −9
  • Fibre 3.5 g: +4
  • Protein 9 g: +3

100 − 8 − 20 − 5 − 15 − 9 + 4 + 3 = 50/100, "Think twice". In the app, every scan shows this same list under "Why this score".

What the score does not do

  • It does not look at price, brand, taste or ads. It only uses the label.
  • It does not consider portion size, your age or your health conditions.
  • It does not check allergens. Always read the pack if you have an allergy.
  • It is only as accurate as the label data. If a value is missing, that rule is skipped, and when too little is known we show no score.

Questions

Is the KompareAI score made by AI?

No. The number comes from fixed rules applied to the nutrition label, so the same label always gets the same score. AI is only used afterwards to write a plain-language explanation and suggest alternatives.

Where does the label data come from?

From Open Food Facts, a free, community-built product database (ODbL licence). Values are per 100 g or 100 ml as printed on the pack.

Why does a product have no score?

If fewer than two of sugar, saturated fat, salt and energy are known and the processing level is unknown, we do not guess. We show "no score" instead.

Do ads or brands change the score?

No. The score is calculated only from the label facts. Advertisers, affiliate links and brands have no input into it.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is everyday shopping guidance. If you have a medical condition or a special diet, follow your doctor or dietitian.

We may change these rules over time, and when we do, we update this page. The rules are the ones the app uses today.
